Description
In September 1740, singer Tito Amato is offered the lead role in an opera being staged at an isolated villa in the Italian hills. Puzzled by the air of secrecy that enshrouds the production but attracted by a generous fee, Tito agrees. The countryside is awash with the golden hues of autumn, but the bucolic mood quickly turns menacing when a notorious figure from Tito's past turns up at the villa. That night, at the stroke of twelve, a soprano stumbles over a stranger who has been beaten to death with the clock pendulum. With the local constable away on a boar hunt, the midnight murderer strikes with impunity, raising terror to a fevered crescendo. Tito must pursue his own quest for answers, a quest that leads straight into the painful secrets of his heart and beyond.

I'm generally not a mystery fan. I think they usually take too long fooling around and discussing, discussing, discussing the possible suspects. But I enjoyed these books even though I thought they also diddled around a lot. This may be even more a problem, since in those days the lack of telephones made Tito's sleuthing slower than I would like, also evident in the other books. But I'm both a opera fan, including baroque, and a lover of Venice. I also enjoyed Donna Leon's books about her Inspector Brunetti. I got into mysteries because I was trying to find some for my mother and her Kindle, other than her favorite J.R. Robb novels. I've tried to like those but I find the proposed future in Robb's books to be way too depressing.
