Some purchasers have complained that they need to buy all the authors books in order to get embroidery instructions and a list of floss colors for each of the 70 transfers. They also complain about small size of transfer—but a few large and many medium size pattens are included. (I feature a few of the smaller patterns/transfers in photos.) I enjoy selecting my own colors and my own type of stitches. But for those who wish to reproduce the artist’s work, they can do so without the details provided in her other books. That is because there is an excellent photograph of each transfer included in the book. Should I decide to use the artist’s colors in my work, I will take the book to the craft store to match the colors. The photos are that exceptional!. And the types of stitches used by the artist are clearly seen in the photographs. No text is needed to reproduce her work—just exceptional talent that I do not have. I began embroidering as a young girl. After a few pillowcases, I quit because it was so labor intensive. Not until I became a grandmother five years ago, did I start sewing and embroidery again. Now I can’t stop. At age 70, embroidering is just an enjoyable addiction . I will never frame my imperfect work. I embroider gifts that are functional—children’s activity books, quilts, aprons, clothing, kitchen towels made of quality flour sack fabric, curtains, clothing, baby bibs, bonnets, scarves, tablecloths, sets of linen dinner napkins, and shams/pillowcases. The designs in this book are mostly small— the perfect size for large dinner napkins. I will use the mid-sized transfers on kitchen towels and maybe shams. I have purchased a “mountain” of transfers in the past five year—but none are like the ones in this book. I am so glad to have stumbled upon this book. The designs are what I have been searching for years. I will likely use all 70 transfers in this book—making this book a real bargain. These designs are a nice break from all the Aunt Martha, Stitch Revolution, etc. transfers. I love the vintage designs I have been using for years, but now it is time to start painting with threads. NOTE: the author drew simple designs to allow individuals to create their own design stitches. I tried to reproduce the author’s work, but I just don’t have the talent, eyesight, patience, or steady hands. The transfer that I did last—the dragonfly—I made it MY own way. I choose not to allow the photograph in the book to guide me. Instead of the typical bluish green dragonfly, I made a “Flaming Skimpering Dragonfly”, using stitches that are easier for me to make. I like the author’s work much better; but in the long run, mine look better when I do not attempt the extreme details the author uses in her work. It is better to keep it simple, when one has a lack of skills.
