I prefer cooking on charcoal but occasionally cook using propane on a 2 burner infra red grill. I wanted a smoker box that would fit comfortably in my Smoky Joe , Smoky Joe Jr or the gas grill . I also wanted one that was cast iron since I used to have one years ago. I still had a bag of hickory chips from way back when and using foil just isn't consistent enough for me . I found one that fit the bill , was used so it was priced way better than new so I figured I'd give it a try .Other than a decal stuck on the box thanking me for buying used I couldn't tell it wasn't brand new . I've used it twice , once on my Smoky Joe and once on my Smoky Joe Jr , with both giving exactly what I'd hoped for . On the Jr it actually did something I wasn't expecting in that the coals were beneath the box in the center and the heat radiated from the box even better than the coals alone do . I cook indirectly on both charcoal grills and directly on my Aussie square charcoal grill and my Nexgrill infrared . Each method has its advantages and uses but I prefer indirect when possible because it's a slower method that gives more time for more flavors , including smoke , to permeate but for veggies and fish I prefer direct and no smoke .Both times I used the box I did not soak the chips and did not pre season the box . Both grills got a lot of smoke added to the smoke the charcoal produces and while Jr was burgers the big Weber was chicken thigh filets . Both had a hint of sweet added from the hickory and both gained an open fire on cast iron taste which was awesome on the burgers and a pleasant surprise to the chicken .Some have spoken of a concern for rust but I can attest after a few uses and grease from meat slathering the box inside and out the only part that'll possibly rust is underneath as long as it's not left out in the rain . My old box lasted well over a decade and was lost during a move or I'd still be using it now .This box was thicker than my old one so it took a little longer to warm up but once warm it put out a lot of hickory smoke . It was just place it on top of the coals that I already had centred in the grill for indirect cooking and it radiated the heat nicely and actually helped the grill stay hot a little longer than the coals alone so I was able to cook a second batch of burgers without adding more charcoal .Other than being thicker the box looks exactly like the Weber box I bought back in the early 90s .If rust is a worry , season the box like you would any cast iron pan or pot . Any cast iron you cook with will enhance the flavor of whatever you're cooking so if it's a choice between cast iron or stainless steel you'll be glad you chose cast iron even more after it gets used a few times .Great qualityI like to place it on the flavor bars in my Weber. The box is locked k but the one I received did not have a lid like displayedMarinaded ribs. Slow baked off the fat. BBQed with wood chips! Yummy!I like the box, but I feel it could use a little more air flow. It is sometimes hard to get the chips lit.Built like a tank, but that might be the problem - on our gas grill. while cooking "low & slow", the heavy duty box won't heat up enough to start the wood chips smoking. I get more smoke from a tinfoil pouch of chips placed on the grill grates.I love it. I just wish it was about twice as big. Always have to add more wood chips when smoking chicken. Works great though. Easy to clean. And easy to use to add great flavor to my meats and foods on the grill. This thing is heavy duty, I use it in a gas BBQ and I have to rig it up to sit right on top of a flame. It takes a long time to get hot enough to smoke. Would be more ideal for charcoal to set right on the coals. This metal box with holes is amazing and works as well as any metal box with holes.Well made. Perfect size and strong.Great addition to my Weber for smoking grilled meat.heavy, sturdy, can be tricky to clean (if you do that sort of thing). Wish it was a bit deeper (for longer smoking) or wider (for more intense flavouring) but works well. I'll have to play around with other tricks to make it work perfectly for me but seems like a product that will last a lifetimeWorked very well. Used it the other day to smoke ribs. Was able to achieve smoke ring and flavor. Well worth the price. It is very sturdy. One thing to note, make sure you preheat your grill with this in it to get it smoking.
