Since being diagnosed with hemochromatosis a few months ago, I have not felt physically ill, but I have been on an emotional roller coaster. The reason is that this disease, though common is hereditary, and the body turns against those who suffer from it. Those who have this disease absorb too much iron, which can affect the liver and other vital organs. There is also a lot of contradictory information on the Internet, and if you're hoping to get straight answers from your doctor, I wish you luck. I don't think there are many doctors who are experts on this disease. The treatment for this illness is phlebotomy, removing a pint of blood periodically to bring iron levels to the normal range. While effective, this treatment can deplete the body of other necessary nutrients. Therefore it is important to maintain a balanced diet while avoiding foods high in iron.Living Well With Hemochromatosis has helped me sift through all the contradictions. It has also given me factual information about how to determine where I am personally with regard to what is normal iron stores. It also gives guidelines for a diet and supplements that inhibit iron absorption. It is written for the lay person, but refers to studies that substantiate the information in the book. A very worthwhile purchase.
