Description
Amazon.com Arvo Pärt's new work, Kanon Pokajanen is an unqualified masterpiece. Although he's previously written music with similar notions of harmonic rhythm and melodic economy, this work successfully incorporates and develops material that in this context easily could become unwieldy. The texts are taken from the canon of repentance of the Russian Orthodox Church, a subject that's occupied the composer for many years. These songs of transformation "invoke the border between day and night ... prophecy and fulfillment, the here and the hereafter." Supervised by the composer, this performance by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir is pure gold, and likely will remain the definitive recording. Part's music rises from gentle valleys to impressive dramatic heights; from single voices to full choir. Here is 83 minutes of exquisite a cappella music in which time and space seem one, and rhythms find their place in a perfect synchrony with breathing and heartbeat. Whether any of this is conscious on the composer's part is incidental. Pärt is tuned into something that finds us and touches us all. --David Vernier Review Arvo Part's now familiar chant-based meditations here unravel their unhurried progress in an unaccompanied choral work, lasting an hour and a half, based on the Orthodox canon of repentance, part of the morning office in Greek and Russian monasteries. -- BBC MagazineHis latest is a landmark a cappella choral work of brooding majesty based on the Russian Orthodox canon of repentance. -- Entertainment WeeklyMaintaining a severe a cappella format, [Arvo Part] has added highly effective dabs of his own harmony, dramatic contrasts between the different sections of the choir.... It requires--but richly rewards--repeated hearings. -- USA Today

I'm ashamed. I'm a fool. I have cared about trivial things. I have broken people's hearts. I have caused much suffering for my own selfish desires. I'm sorry. This album is my cry for forgiveness.Coming out of the hustle of society and listening to this album is crushing. It is the most emotionally powerful music I've ever heard, and though they are choral compositions, it transcends language. The emotions it portrays can easily drop you to your knees. Be careful, because it can be overwhelming. I almost didn't make it through the whole album, and I don't know how often I will be able to sit down and listen to it again, not because I didn't like it (I loved it more than words can describe), but because it was so powerful!I haven't been religious for many years, and though I have held on to some sort of spirituality, nothing has been able to affect me spiritually as much as this album did. It reminded me of what I lose sight of when I go out into society, and it is this: We are one with all of existence, and we owe an apology to anything we have ever harmed, for our lives are no more important than anyone else's!Listen to this album, weep, and enter back into the world as a more humble and loving person.
